Dr Sarah Samuels
Hi, I’m Sarah! I am an HCPC registered, and BPS chartered Clinical Psychologist and have been working with people with a learning disability and autistic people for over 20 years. I have worked in various NHS mental health, learning disability and neurodevelopmental services during this time, where I’ve had the privilege of meeting children, young people and adults hearing their stories, seeing their truth and supporting them through difficult times.
As a specialist in neurodiversity and learning disability, my services include psychological therapy, diagnostic assessments, pre and post diagnostic support, and consultation. I also offer supervision and training to health and social care professionals and organisations.
Central to my clinical practice is a passion to help people develop a better understanding of themselves, manage difficult emotions and rediscover their self-worth. Sessions are weekly, fortnightly or monthly depending on what we agree following our initial conversation. Sometimes the best support for an individual will be through their network of care, and in these situations, I work closely with families, carers and services providing indirect support sessions. I have experience of working with individuals, couples, families and systems, and can offer either online or face to face sessions (on the Devon/Somerset border). When you are ready to take the next step, or if you have further questions, please get in touch via my secure email at DrSarahSamuels@proton.me. I will endeavour to answer all emails within 3 days.
Therapy
As we journey through life we encounter numerous transitions, whether that’s a new stage of education or work, family issues, health concerns or diagnosis, peri/menopause, bereavements, or something else. These all involve change, and are often accompanied by anxiety and loss; some of which will feel more difficult than others. I’ve noticed through my practice how times of transition can be especially challenging for many neurodiverse (diagnosed or not) individuals. These transitional times are often when extra support is required. If you are not sure what you need, please do get in touch and we can figure this out together.
If you chose to do some psychological therapy with me, we would work at your pace, in a way that suits you. The work might focus on improving emotional regulation or developing strategies around anxiety or low mood. I can support you with processing past trauma or adverse life events and finding ways to help you manage the impact of these on your daily life. Or it could be that our work together focuses on your journey to understand and adapt to the discovery that you are neurodiverse. Whether you are navigating past or current difficulties, or experiencing anxiety, depression or OCD perhaps, we will work together to identify strategies that work best for you.
Every person is unique and each individual experiences life and its challenges in a different way. So, if we worked together, we would begin by developing a shared understanding of what this looks like for you. Then we can work collaboratively using approaches and strategies that suit you best. This might be drawing on my training in Eye movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, Family Therapy (FT) or Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). It could also draw on other models I have experience in such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT). I am skilled in being able to integrate and adapt these approaches for neurodivergent people or people with intellectual disabilities, so the psychological therapy is fully accessible and inclusive. I am aware how difficult this first step can be, especially finding someone who is a good fit, so if you would like to email me at Drsarahsamuels@proton.me I can answer any queries, or we could arrange a (free) brief chat.
Therapy sessions last 50-60 minutes and cost £120.
I can accept payments from a range of private health insurance providers. If you plan to use insurance to cover your sessions, please contact me in advance so we can confirm eligibility and any requirements from your insurer.
Assessments
I offer NICE compliant autism and ADHD assessments for children, young people and adults. The assessment considers areas strengths and skills as well as areas of differences including communication, organisational skills, relationships, sensory experience and coping strategies. I work hard to manage expectations, offer clear timeframes and ensure you feel safe and supported through the diagnostic journey. There are a number of steps to the process:
-
A pre-assessment consultation, where we plan the assessment together
-
A background information interview
-
Liaison with family members, education or health professionals (this will be dependent on assessment and individual and will only take place with your consent)
-
Observational assessment
-
*School observation may also be needed for children and young people’s ADHD assessment
-
Feedback meeting, where outcome and recommendations will be discussed
-
Written report
This process is tailored to suit individual needs allowing for flexibility as required, whilst still following clinical best practice guidelines. In some instances, this will involve other professionals e.g. Occupational Therapy colleagues when assessing younger children; where required, this will be discussed with you in advance. If you would like to go ahead with this, or would like a more detailed explanation of the processes involved please email me on Drsarahsamuels@proton.me and I will send you relevant information in terms of the assessment you are seeking, ASD, ADHD or combined.
Assessment package fee is available on request.
I also offer pre and post diagnostic support to help people either considering a diagnostic assessment or who do not want a formal diagnosis but identify as neurodiverse. I can also help with processing and understanding what a diagnosis means for you or your family. I understand differences such as selective mutism, masking, rejection sensitivity, impulsivity and demand avoidance. I can also support families who wish to better understand and support their loved one, and liaise with educators, providers or professionals as needed.
Pre and post diagnostic support is charged at my regular hourly rate of £120.
I can accept payments from a range of private health insurance providers. If you plan to use insurance to cover your sessions, please contact me in advance so we can confirm eligibility and any requirements from your insurer.
Consultations
Consultation can be provided as a one-off session, designed to help clarify a specific problem and discuss support options and/or next steps. Alternatively, a series of consultations might work better, combining assessment work, formulation, action planning and follow up. I have extensive experience of supporting both individuals and services to manage complex individuals and risky situations. I can help better understand a difficult or stuck situation, tease apart the different contributing factors and work with you to consider possible next steps. This consultation approach can be particularly helpful for services or families supporting individuals with a learning disability or neurodiverse individuals. Working in this way can highlight what a person needs to have a high quality of life and wellbeing. In situations where a specific specialist assessment is indicated or recommended, such as functional assessment within a positive behaviour support model, or mental capacity act assessment, these will be tailored to your specific needs and include a written report. Please email me at Drsarahsamuels@proton.me for more details.
A one-off consultation costs £150 including a summary report. Longer consultations and specific assessments will be individually costed for, following a brief (free) initial conversation.
I can accept payments from a range of private health insurance providers. If you plan to use insurance to cover your sessions, please contact me in advance so we can confirm eligibility and any requirements from your insurer.
Training and Supervision
I offer interactive workshops and training packages in mental health, neurodiversity and disability. Some are designed with individuals or family members and carers in mind, whereas others are more geared to professionals and organisations. Further details of local training events will be advertised in due course. I also have a wealth of experience in supervision and various supervision qualification, which I very much enjoy using to support psychological practitioners as well as social care and health professionals at all stages of their careers. I have a specialist interest in neurodiversity and disability, as well as experience of supporting services with formulation and reflective practice. Please get in touch with me at Drsarahsamuels@proton.me to discuss your needs, so as we can develop a bespoke package of training or supervision best suited to you.
